PRESENTATION

The aim of this course is to provide an introduction to big data analysis tools and related practical applications. It includes:

  •     lessons on the Unix/Linux operating system, and an introduction to working on remote computing servers
  •     courses in Python language, focusing on data manipulation with the numpy and pandas libraries

Course's manager(s)

Marc Bailly-Bechet

In class

  • 10h of lectures
  • 12h of practical work
  • 22h of Cours-TP intégrés

PREREQUISITES

Before the start of the course, I must ...
  • navigate and find the way around the Linux shell
  • have basic imperative programming skills (in Python or another language)

OBJECTIVES

By the end of this course, I should be able to...
  • manage a Linux machine, with the ability to install programs and run remote commands
  • manipulate large datasets with Python, using the numpy and pandas libraries

CONTENT

  • Two sessions are dedicated to:

    - command-line installation of Linux software. Blast and Pfamscan, two programs traditionally used in click-and-click mode, are installed and used on the command line.

    - remote connection to a compute server and working on it entirely in the Linux terminal.

  • Over 5 sessions, students will learn how to use the Python language:

    - reminders of imperative programming

    - use of the numpy library

    - use of the pandas library

    - application on large datasets.
