PRESENTATION

The course focuses on different economic aspects of the digital transformation and the rise of AI, covering more specifically:

  • The evolution of markets and the structure of firms
  • The new forms of digital labour
  • Some welfare consequences of digital addiction
  • Some social and political consequences of this new economic organisation

OBJECTIVES

By the end of this course, I should be able to...
  • Give a basic measure of the welfare costs of digital addiction
  • Identify the new form of power relations between economic actors following the digital transformation
  • Determine the cases in which new forms of digital labour such as gig work and crowd work are economically sustainable
  • Identify the political, social, and ecological challenges raised by AI

CONTENT

  • The introduction provides a brief overview of the development of digital technologies, and discusses in detail the case of CAPTCHAs as an illustration of the materiality of the digital transformation

  • This section discusses how digital transformation affects transaction costs and the potential consequences for the organisation of economic activities.

  • This section presents different forms of 'digital labour', such as gig work, crowd work and networked labour. It also highlights some of the challenges involved in organising economic activities when freelance and salaried workers coexist.

  • The section discusses the case of digital addiction (with the presentation of online controlled experiment as a common methodology to adapt online contents), and introduces some strategy to measure the welfare costs of addiction. 

  • Based on the contents of the previous sections, we discuss here in detail Crawford & Joler (2018) 'Anatomy of an AI system', available here: https://anatomyof.ai/ 

  • This final section explores different political challenges raised by the new economic organisation that emerged from the digital transformation, and the threats to liberal democracies it poses.
